The next stage of AI development will be Agentic AI—systems capable of planning, making decisions, using digital tools, and completing complex tasks with minimal human intervention. Many experts describe this shift as one of the most important technological trends of the coming decade.
Unlike traditional chatbots, Agentic AI is not limited to responding to prompts. It can independently break down complex objectives into smaller tasks, gather information, make intermediate decisions, interact with software and online services, and deliver a completed result.
For example, instead of simply suggesting a travel itinerary, an AI agent could search for flights, compare hotels, prepare the required documents, complete booking forms, and present a finalized travel plan. Similar approaches are already being tested in software development, scientific research, healthcare, finance, and logistics.
According to the Stanford AI Index 2026, agent-based systems have emerged as one of the industry's most significant directions. Researchers note that AI is rapidly moving beyond one-off interactions and is increasingly demonstrating the ability to perform real-world, multi-step tasks.
The report also emphasizes that AI capabilities are advancing much faster than society's ability to evaluate, regulate, and safely deploy these technologies. Closing this gap is expected to become one of the major challenges of the coming years.
Experts believe Agentic AI has the potential to fundamentally reshape knowledge work.
While generative AI automated the creation of text, images, and computer code, agentic systems are expected to automate entire workflows. They will be able to execute complex business processes, interact with enterprise software, and function as digital assistants—or even virtual employees.
Many analysts see this transition as the next major phase in the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence across the global economy.
As Agentic AI advances, concerns about safety and governance are also growing. Recent research has found that while developers often publish extensive information about the capabilities of their AI agents, far fewer disclose how those systems are evaluated for safety, monitored for risks, or controlled once deployed.
As a result, experts increasingly argue for common international standards covering transparency, independent evaluation, and robust governance of autonomous AI systems.
Global competition in artificial intelligence is no longer focused solely on building the most capable language models. Increasingly, competitive advantage depends on computing infrastructure, data centers, specialized AI chips, and software ecosystems that support autonomous agents.
The Stanford AI Index notes that the United States continues to lead in private investment and AI infrastructure, while China has significantly narrowed the performance gap in frontier AI models and remains a global leader in AI research output and patent activity.
Most leading AI research organizations agree that the coming years will mark the transition from generative AI to autonomous agentic systems. If today's chatbots can answer questions, tomorrow's AI agents will independently execute long, complex, and goal-oriented tasks.
For that reason, many analysts believe the next stage of global competition will not be determined by who builds the single most powerful AI model, but by who succeeds first in integrating Agentic AI into business, science, education, healthcare, and government.
